Fonds consists of certificates and other documents relating to Clunie's nursing education 1936-1943 and her service as a nursing sister in the Second World War 1943-1946. The bulk of her correspondence is comprised of letters (1943-1945) which Betty Clunie wrote to her parents while overseas. Her detailed journal depicts the camaraderie of nursing sisters, air raids and unique working and living conditions. Journal entries also illustrate the social activities of military life, leave excursions in Scotland, Paris, Amsterdam, Canadians marrying abroad and a visit to Buckingham Palace. Material relating to her post-war training and her effort to start an industrial nursing section in Quebec.

The largest single subject the photography album are images of places that Clunie visited and locations where she was posted. The photographs of her postings include views of the grounds, exteriors of the buildings, other staff, occasional parties, and some views of surgeries and dispensaries in which she worked. Her postings included No. 17 Canadian General Hospital at Pinewood in England, and the CGH at Ghent, in Belgium. Subjects include Christmas dinners or other parties; surgeries, dispensaries and hospital ships; marriages of nursing sisters; VE Day celebrations in Ghent; other nursing sisters and personnel; and extensive travel and tourist views. Few of the photographs concern patients. There is also one map of Ghent, one postcard of Vimy Ridge, Le Mémorial Canadien and several photocopies of diary entries and correspondence in the album.

Clunie, Elizabeth, 1916-1995 : Elizabeth (Betty) Clunie was born in Lachute, QC in 1916, the daughter of Ethel and Dr. George Clunie, a dentist. She graduated from the Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She worked as a nurse at the Royal Edward Laurentian Hospital, a tuberculosis sanatorium, in St. Agathe QC in 1940, and then worked for Alcan as a nurse at the Arvida General Hospital. Clunie took an operating room course at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto in 1943.

Clunie joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps as a nursing sister in August 1943, training initially at the Chorley Park Military Hospital in Toronto and then at Debert Military Hospital in Debert NS. She left Halifax in January 1944 for England where she was stationed at No. 17 Canadian General Hospital at Pinewood, England as an operating room nurse. Clunie was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in February 1944. During the weeks following D-Day, thousands casualties were treated at No. 17 Canadian General Hospital. Clunie's expertise was mainly in the area of bone surgery. In March 1945, she went by the hospital ship, The Duchess of Argyle to Ostend, Belgium and then to No. 2 Canadian General Hospital at Ghent as an operating room nurse. In May 1945, she volunteered for service in the Pacific Theatre, but the war ended before she could be sent there.

Betty Clunie was posted to the Montreal Military Hospital as an operating room nurse in September 1945 and was demobilized in June 1946. Afterwards Clunie earned a degree in public health at the University of Toronto. She worked as an industrial nurse at Brown Corporation in La Tuque, QC and later with Imperial Oil in Montreal. She was also instrumental in setting up the Industrial Health Nursing Group in Quebec. She retired from nursing in 1951 when she married Lloyd Jamieson, who had served in the RCAF. Betty Jamieson died on 18 February 1995.
