Lithographs of the American west which appeared as parts of official reports on the surveys carried out by the United States Government of the 47th and 49th parallels of latitude, and issued in parts between 1855 and 1860. Works by John Mix Stanley include the following: Plate V, White Bear Lake; Plate VI, Pike Lake; Plate VII, Bois de Sioux River; Plate VIII, Maple River; Plate XII, Camp Red River Hunters (C-1292); Plate XIII Butte de Morale; Plate XIV Distribution of Goods to the Assiniboines (C-1291); Plate XV, Near Mouse River (Rivière de Souris; Plate XVI, Fort Union and Distribution of Goods to the Assiniboines (C-1290); Plate XVII, Milk River, near junction of Missouri; Plate XX, Milk River and Panther Mountain; Plate XXII, Milk River - Bear's Paw Mountain in Distance; Plate XXXV, Coeur d'Alene Mission St. Ignatius River; Plate XXXVIII, Hudson Bay Mill (C-9926); Plate XL, Mouth of Peluse [Palouse] River; Plate XLIII, Dalles; Plate XLIV, Fort Vancouver, W.T.; Plate LV, Flathead Lake, looking southward; Plate LVIII, Hot Springs at Source of Lou Lou Fork, Bitter Root Mountains, Looking West; Plate LXVIII, Puget Sound & Mt. Rainier, From Whitby's Island; and Plate LXX, Mt. Baker & Cascade Range, from Whitby's Island. Works by Gustave Sohon include: Plate LIII, Kamas Prairie of the Pend D'Oreille Indians in the Rocky Mountains, Looking Southward; and Plate LIV, View of the Clark's Fork and the Ridge of the Mountains, South of the Flathead Lake, Looking Eastwards.
The United States government published these lithographs as part of a series of reports on the expeditions to trace the 47th and 49th parallels of latitude, and the Pacific Rail Road survey of 1853-4.
The reports were issued by the War Department between 1855 and 1860, in numerous parts.
These works have never been accessioned, although they bear a cataloguing date of 17/4/21. See RG 37 "C" series, Volume 330, File 1912-13, File 412 for further information as to the likely source for these works.
