General note:

Painting entitled "Jacques Cartier" depicting the famous French explorer and colonizer on board his ship looking towards land. Copied by Theophile Hamel (1817-1870) from a supposedly-authentic portrait by François Riss. A copy of the work was lithographed in New York in 1848.
This work is not listed in any Public Archives accession records, nor is there a mention of it in pre-1931 RG 37 "C" Series records. It is assumed that the work entered the Public Archives before 1931..
The work, op0024, was located (in Febraury 1997) in 0330-C002.
