Canada. Dept. of Justice. Correctional Planning Committee : Established by the Minister of Justice in December 1958, the Correctional Planning Committee grew out of a perceived need to upgrade and modernize the penal system in Canada. The formation of the committee was preceded by the Fauteux Report in 1956 (see Solicitor General fonds) and a Dominion-Provincial conference on corrections in October 1958, both of which recommended changes to existing correctional institutions and practices. The mandate of the Correctional Planning Committee was to make recommendations and plans for the following: the building of new correctional institutions; a comprehensive program of rehabilitation for offenders addicted to narcotic drugs; a recruitment and training program for correctional workers; a program for the management and care of paroled and released inmates; a research program to aid in the development of a modern correctional system; and a program of public relations and education. The members of the Correctional Planning Committee were A.J. MacLeod, J.A. McLaughlin and J.R. Stone. Committee members conducted research in Canada, the United States and Great Britain. The final report of the Committee was delivered in 1960.
