We reached it by night. / It seemed like a scene from fairy land - quite unreal. Two big / fires burnt outside the tents. We landed at a stage covered with / balsam boughs wh. led up to the governor gererals tent. The / night was as placid as could be. Soft white sand ... the / margin of the lake. The forest formed a close background / to the tents. The smoke from the fires shed a mystic veil over / the whole. In the [^Early] morning The low sun glared amongst / the trees and then lay shadows on the surface of the lake. / We had but to go outside our tents to gain the most luxurious / of baths. One ... the parallel canoes, ... / the corner from the river & cut the long reflections on the / grey water.
