It began in the lee of a ridge on the prairie. Initially, it was named Grantown after its founder Cuthbert Grant (a Métis) who settled there in 1824. He was soon joined by many Métis families. St. François Xavier was also named the White Horse Plains (La Prairie du Cheval Blanc).
