The medal is representative of the Royal Military Order of Saint Louis founded in 1693 by Louis XIV.

On one arm of the cross can be seen a Ram's Head Mark (the gold guarantee mark from Paris) indicating that the medal was made during the period 1819-1838. Differences in the attachment, the ribbon and the size of the medallion indicate that this cross was most likely awarded to a diplomat. (See memo of 04/01/2002, from Major C. Villeneuve, in accession file).
