Inscribed. Dated., Inscription: Inscribed recto: in black ink, "The Signet Ring of. [wax impression] Mary Queen of Scots. / A single Diamond of [drawing] this size set in a plain / Gold rim. It is remarkable for the sharpness and beauty / with which the Arms & Initials are cut as well as for / the offense it gave to Elizabeth, the assumpture of the / English Arms, it is supposed hastened to death / of Mary. She gave her Ring to one of her Servants / immediately before her execution to be conveyed / to her Son James 1st.. from James 1st it fell by inheritance / to Charles 1st. and he doubly consucated it by presenting / it at the Scaffold of Bishop Nixon. James II in / his [illegible] pawned it for 300 Guineas, the old / Pretender repurchased it for 320 Guineas and it / was by him bequeathed to Cardinal York. / 1853 / The Glass seals made by Tassy [?] are now sold / and it is said that the last letter written by / Mary before her execution (to the then Bishop / of Oxford) was sealed with this Seal.; in black ink, on accompanying envelop: Impression of / Mary Queen of Scot's / seal."
