Inscription: In the print recto, above image u.c.: Hudson's Bay Company / INCORPORATED 2[^nd] MAY 1670 / INDIANS WITH PIERRE ESPIRIT RADISSON AND MEDARD CHOUART, SIEUR DES GROSEILLIERS, CHARLES FORT, 1671, by LORNE BOUCHARD, R.C.A. Charles Fort at the mouth / of the Rupert River, in present-day Quebec, had been built by Medard Chouart, Sieur des / Groseilliers, and Captain Zachariah Gillam and his men in 1668. In 1670 the newly incorporated / Hudson's Bay Company sent out two ships to the Bay and des Groseilliers and Pierre Espirit / Radisson were aboard. The men built another house so that Charles Fort now consisted / l.r.: of two "English houses:, of two storeys each, with thatched roofs and brick chimneys. In May, / when the ice had been cleared from the rivers, hundreds of Indians came down to trade. In addition / to furs they also brought venison, wildfowl and hares, which supplemented the salt beef and pork / brought by the men from England. This painting shows Radisson accepting a gift of food from / one of the Indians while des Groseilliers greets one of the Chiefs.
