This image appears on the recto fol. 4 of calendar. The calendar has 4 folios. The last 4 months and image are printed in inverse order, top to bottom.
Louis Riel (1844-1885) was the Métis spokesman, founder of Manitoba, teacher, and leader of the North-West Resistance.

Inscribed., Inscription: In the print recto, above image u.c.: Hudson Bay Company / INCORPORATED 2[^nd] MAY 1670 / below image l.l.: DONALD SMITH AND LOUIS RIEL, FORT GARRY, 1870, by BRUCE JOHNSON. The Hudson's / Bay Company agreed to surrender its chartered territory of Rupert's Land in 1869, and in the / summer of that year the Canadian Government sent a party of surveyors to the Red River / Settlement to make preliminary surveys. The Metis , understandably, became alarmed. They had / not been consulted about the surveys and they were concerned about the break-up of their land. / On November 2, 1869, Louis Riel and his followers took possession of the Hudson's Bay Company's / l.r.: Fort Garry, and later they formed a Provisional Government with Riel as President. To handle / this complex problem prime Minister John A. Macdonald appointed Donald A. Smith of the / Hudson's Bay Company "Special Commissioner, to enquire into and report on the causes and / extent of the armed obstruction offered at the Red River . . .". This painting shows part of the / crowd of one thousand who assembled on January 19, 1870, to hear Donald Smith, who was / accompanied by Louis Riel, explain his commission.
