Northern Canada Power Commission : The Northwest Territories Power Commission (the Northwest Territories Power Commission Act, R.S.C. 1912, c. 196) was established in 1948 to oversee the construction and operation of power and utility plants in the northern territories. It assumed responsibility for existing power projects such as the Snare River, NWT development from the Special Projects section of the Department of Mines and Resources. The Commission also began to expand tis activities into many other areas of the North, operating diesel generating stations and small hydro electric power projects. In 1950, the mandate of the Commission was enlarged to include the Yukon Territory and, accordingly, the agency's name was changed to the Northern Canada Power Commission (amended in 1956 by the Northern Canada Power Commission Act 4-5 Eliz.II, c. 42). In 1966 NCPC purchased the capital stock of the Northern Light, Power and Coal Company and its three subsidiaries; the Yukon Telephone Syndicate, Dawson City Water and Power Company and the Dawson Electric Light and Power Company. These entities were added to the holdings of the expanded corporate activities of the NCPC. By agreement with the territorial governments, the federal government transferred the responsibilities of the Commission to the Yukon in 1987 (Northern Canada Power Commission Yukon Assets Disposal Authorization Act (S.C. 1987, c.9) and to the Northwest Territories in 1988. The Commission is now defunct and its assets have been sold to the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and to private concerns. Thus the involvement of the federal government in power generation and distribution in the North came to an end.
