I was working as a playground supervisor for the vancouver parks board that summer; and a number of students from UBC were hired for those positions. We were given a little training in First Aid and in Self Defense and were sent out to the playgrounds. My partner was Jerry something ski(can,t remember his last name). I do not know if we were hired because of our ethnicity or our prospective future careers. He was studying to be a school teacher and i was entering the school of nursing. It was one of the most enjoyable jobs i have had in my life!
At the end of the summer , McLean Park was awarded as the best playground in vancouver for that year on the basis of highest attendance, most activities, and most creative, thanks to jerry. We managed to put on a stage production that summer, erecting a temporary stage as well. To my knowledge, i do not remember any incidents involving fights or bullying on the playground.
The playground was in the east end amongst the working class from many different ethnic backgrounds. If memory serves me, i think i was given a wage of $109.00 per month. For me that was much better than working at the Canadian Fishing Company as i did the previous year, packing tins of canned salmon or sorting tin cans on the assembly
