Item consists of sixteen photographs, fourteen of which display four photographs of wedding pictures; one with the title of the exhibition and introductory text as well as a photograph of a couple; and one photograph of a list of the names of all the exhibition participants.

de Courcy, Michael, 1944- : Michael de Courcy, born 1944 in Montreal studied at the École des Beaux-Arts Montreal and the Vancouver School of Art. He has lectured and given workshops at many cultural institutions including: The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, York University, the University of British Columbia and Emily Carr College of Art and Design. He has had solo exhibitions at the Burnaby Art Gallery, Vancouver Art Gallery, Richmond Art Gallery and has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Photography into Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. His work is in the collection of the Art Bank, the Vancouver Art Gallery the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada.

The Wedding Picture Project was inspired by a discarded wedding photo found by Michael de Courcy in a parking lot. Inspired by his find, de Courcy decided to investigate this type of portraiture and an exhibition at the Richmond Art Gallery presented the perfect opportunity to draw on the community of Richmond, British Columbia. Through newspaper ads, de Courcy asked people to bring their wedding photographs to a number of photo shoots. In each photograph taken by de Courcy someone from the community holds up a wedding portrait, but we do not see who the person is as de Courcy focuses simply on the hands and photograph each person is holding. The photographs speak of the people of Richmond and of a special event in their lives. The Wedding Picture Project is a collective portrait of the community of Richmond, a city described as a vibrant, rapidly expanding and culturally diverse with a population of around 180,000 [in 1994]. The Wedding Picture Project offers a glimpse of the diversity of Richmond's inhabitants, presenting people of all ages, different traditions, cultures and religions.

The Wedding Picture Project exhibition opened at the Richmond Art Gallery, Richmond, British Columbia, on 1 December 1994. It was held in conjunction with a 25-year retrospective of de Courcy's work: Surveying a Territory: Urban Wilderness Revisited., Exhibition title : Beyond Likeness : Contemporary Works from the Portrait Gallery of Canada.
