Billopp, Louisa : Louisa Billopp, born in Saint-John, New Brunswick ca. 1795, was the daughter of Colonel Christopher Billopp (1737-1827) of Staten Island NY, a prominent member of the British establishment and opposed the separation of the United States from Great Britain.
The family is noted in American history because a peace conference between the Americans and the British was held in their residence, Billopp House, in August 1776. The meeting was initiated by Lord Howe, commander in chief of the British forces, and attended by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and others. Flush with the victory of the Battle of Long Island, Howe offered a full pardon to George Washington if he returned his allegiance to Britain. The offer was refused.
The Billopp family subsequently emigrated, and, with other United Empire Loyalist families, founded in New Brunswick. Christopher Billipp was involved in negotiations for the new province and in the selection of the provincial capital.
Louisa married John Wallace, whose father, Michael Wallace, was also a Loyalist of Nova Scotia, where he was an influential merchant, politician, judge and colonial administrator.
