Canada. Food Prices Review Board : The Food Prices Review Board was established in 1973 under Part I of the Enquiries Act (P.C. 1239, 25 May 1973), and in response to public uncertainty and political tension surrounding the rapid food price increases which began late in 1972. The appointment of such a board was the main recommendation of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Trends in Food Prices.

The Food Prices Review Board was originally given a very restricted research-oriented mandate to provide "detailed and timely information and analyses with regard to price movements amongst food products". Unfortunately, it was never adequately communicated to the public that the Board's mandate was very limited indeed and, as a consequence, much of the public appeared to believe that the Board was established to stop food price increases. Recognizing the problem of undue expectations, and to counteract a steady flow of critcism about the "toothless" Board, the Government conferred a third mandate upon it on 21 August 1973. The new mandate called on the Board to inquire into any possible "unwarranted" increase in the price of food items, and to publish reports thereon.

In addition to research and publications, the F.P.R.B. carried out four major functions: 1) investigations; 2) complaints; 3) price monitoring; 4) policy advocacy.

The Board's initial term of office was to expire on 31 December 1974. Three months before that date the Board's life was extended for a further 12 months, to 31 December 1975 (P.C. 2274, 17 October 1974). The Board was officially disbanded on 14 October 1975 and was succeeded by the Anti-Inflation Board.
