MacDonald, Alexander E., 1892-1976 : Dr. Alexander E. MacDonald, ophthalmologist, graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine in 1916 and specialized in ophthalmology. The author of over fifty papers which have appeared in international, American and Canadian ophthalmological journals, he has also maintained executive positions in the International, American, and Canadian Ophthalmological Societies. During the mid-1940s, he was instrumental in establishing certificates of specialization in ophthalmology under the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and has been the ophthalmological consultant for the Toronto General Hospital and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

Historique de la conservation :

Collection was purchased by the Public Archives of Canada from the estate of the late Dr. Alexander E. MacDonald in 1981. Dr. MacDonald had spent 55 years acquiring the maps in his collection which date between the 1500's up until the twentieth century.

Note sur le classement :

The collection is arranged following the order assigned by the estate prior to coming to LAC. All items in the collection were assigned to series and given individual map numbers.

843 books and articles acquired as part of the collection were transferred to the National Library of Canada. For a complete list of the material search in AMICUS under the name: MacDonald, Alexander Edward, 1892-1977.
