The collection, consisting mostly of textual records and some photographs, documents Mauri Jalava's research interest in Finnish Canadian life and his involvement in organizations such as the Finnish Cultural Federation and the Finnish Canadian Grand Festival Committee, as well as shows the contributions made by different individuals and organizations in shaping and keeping vibrant Finnish Canadian community life.

Jalava, Mauri A, 1925-2004 : Born in 1925 in Turku, Finland, Mauri Amiko Jalava and his wife Anna emigrated to Canada in 1952. Here, he attended Laurentian University, where he successfully completed his Master's Degree with a study of early Finnish immigrants in the Sudbury area. He became actively involved in Finnish Canadian cultural life, serving in a leading role in different Finnish Canadian organizations, including the Finnish Canadian Art Society, and the Finnish Canadian Grand Festival Central Committee. He was a founding member of the Finnish Canadian Cultural Federation, which was established in 1971. The Federation served as umbrella organization for some 60 Finnish cultural organizations from Montreal to Vancouver. At the same time, it helped to sponsor the Finnish Grand Festival, a celebration of Finnish culture in Canada.

Mauri Jalava's interest in the Finnish Canadian experience led him to assume the position of archivist for the Federation. In this capacity, he served as custodian of the records of the organization and its member and associate bodies. At the same time, he collected documentation on Finnish Canadian community life. As a result, the Mauri Amiko Jalava Collection includes Jalava family papers, records of the Finnish Canadian Cultural Federation and associate bodies, as well as the papers of individuals and the records of organizations that have helped to enrich Finnish Canadian cultural life.
