The fonds contains records pertaining to the musical activities of Lubka Kolessa: official records; correspondence; concert programmes; promotional material; press clippings; collection of manuscripts including, among other items: letters (or cards) from [Hans von] Bülow, Léo Delibes, Alexander Dreyschock, Louis Köhler, Theodor Kullack, Ernst Pauer, Carl Reinecke, Aloys Schmidt, Tulius Schulhoff, Clara Schumann, Joseph Wieniawski, [Géza] Zichy; and music by Julius Benedict, Arthur Rubinstein and Wilhelm Taubert (2 lines); photographs of Kolessa and members of her family; recordings of Kolessa made in Germany (1936-1938).

Kolessa, Lubka, 1902-1997 : A pianist and teacher born in Lviv, Galicia (now part of Ukraine in the Community of Independent States), Lubka Kolessa received her musical training at the Vienna Music Academy with Louis Thern, Liszt pupil Emil Sauer, and others. Receiving the Academy's State Master Diploma and Prize, she continued her studies during the summers of 1929 and 1930 with another Liszt pupil, Eugen d'Albert, who was to have a significant influence on her concept of tonality and style. Once her career as a pianist was established, she performed regularly in Europe and was a guest performer with major orchestra conductors including Böhm, Furtwrängler, Walter, Weingartner, Mengelberg, Kleiber, and von Karajan.

In 1940, after living in England for three years, Kolessa settled in Canada where she continued her performance career, giving many recitals and concerts with orchestras both in Canada and at Carnegie Hall in the United States. She performed regularly on the CBC in program series dedicated to major composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin. In 1942, she accepted a teaching position at the Toronto Conservatory of Music, where she was in charge of piano teaching from 1946 to 1949. Starting in 1952, she also gave lessons in Montréal, where she passed on her knowledge to students at the Conservatoire de musique (1952-1973), École Vincent-d'Indy (1955-1966), and McGill University (1960-1971). Kolessa's students include conductor Mario Bernardi, composers Clermont Pépin and John Hawkins, and pianists Howard Brown, Richard Gresko, Louis-Philippe Pelletier, Pierrette Froment and Ireneus Zuk.
