Kraemer, Franz, 1914-1999 : Born in Vienna, Austria, Franz Kraemer was forced, like many of his Jewish compatriots, to flee the Nazi regime. He immigrated to Canada in 1940 and became naturalized Canadian in 1947. A student of the famous composer, Alban Berg, from 1932 to 1935, and of the renowed orchestra conductor, Hermann Scherchen, in 1938, he pursued his studies in composing and conducting at the Toronto Conservatory of Music with Canadian Arnold Walter and Ettore Mazzoleni.

In 1946, Kraemer joined the ranks of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a producer of radio programs and, later, television programs. This date marks the beginning of an almost 25-year collaboration with the public corporation. His televised operatic productions of Benjamen Britten's The Turn of the Screw (1958) and Peter Grimes (1959) and Louis Riel (1969) by the Canadian, Harry Somers, are among some of the most notable.

After the 1970s, Kraemer served the world of music as a producer and promotor of the careers of Canadian performers and composers . We should also mention here his roles as music director at the Toronto Arts Foundation, co-ordinator of musical programs at the Saint Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto and head of the music section at the Canada Council. Even though he retired in 1986, Franz Kraemer continued to act as an advisor (National Arts Centre) and occasionally participated in federal government working groups.

In 1986, he received the Canadian Music Council medal and the Association of Canadian Orchestras prize. He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1987.
