Saunders, Margaret Marshall, 1861-1947 : Margaret Marshall Saunders was a Canadian author, lecturer, and animal rights advocate that lived from May 13, 1861 - February 15, 1947. She is most well known for her bestselling children's book Beautiful Joe, based on a true story of a young dog that is saved from a cruel owner. Beautiful Joe was originally written under the name Marshall Saunders and submitted to the American Humane Education Society for a literary contest.

Saunders was born in Milton, Nova Scotia, and educated in Nova Scotia, Scotland and France. In 1934, Saunders was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1947, she was named a "Person of National Historical Significance" by the Government of Canada.
