Series consists of nine files related to the Dominion Government Coal Blocks, particularly the Railway Belt in British Columbia. The files document the transfer of valuable surface and coal rights from the Canadian Pacific Railway as a result of the Crows Nest Pass Act of 1897. These coal files were selected as having archival value because they document important legal and financial information about the 50,000 acres of Kootenay District lands in British Columbia.

The files span 1882 to 1974, the earliest of which are housed in Department of Resources and Development jackets (specifically, the Lands Division of the Developmental Services Branch) and still contain their original "Land Registry" jackets from the Department of the Interior. Originally assigned the number 470244 as part of the Timber, Mines and Grazing Branch, the later files retain this number but are in jackets from the Northern Administration Branch of the Department of Northern and National Resources (later Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development).

When these records were appraised for archival value in 1994-1995, the records were maintained by the Department in the Mineral Policy & Planning Division, Mineral Strategy Branch, Mineral Policy Sector.

Note sur le classement :

This series was originally created as a temporary holder for containers that had no clear provenance after the AMICAN migration. Because it was not possible to place these records in their proper place in the hierarchy, a miscellaneous series was created. Should a better place in the hierarchy be discerned, the arrangement of these records may be modified.

Related records are found in the series for the Mining Lands and Yukon Branch (R216-110-7-E) of the Northern Affairs Program sous-fonds. Related records may also be found in the Department of the Interior fonds (RG15, R190).
