This series concerns Jean Chrétien's activities, concerns, and social and professional relations in the 1984-1986 period, during which he sat as Official Opposition M.P. for Saint-Maurice (since the Liberal Party of Canada had lost power to the Conservative Party, led by Brian Mulroney). The series also concerns his role as External Affairs Critic in counterpart to Joe Clark, then Secretary of State for External Affairs.

This series is divided into four sub-series: Correspondence; Subject Files; Events Schedule; and Work and Reference Files.

Conservation:

The records of this series are in excellent general condition, and robust measures were taken to preserve them: all metal pieces were removed, newspaper clippings were removed and replaced with photocopies, records in a fragile state of preservation were also photocopied, etc. Lastly, records were removed from their original folders and placed in acid-free folders.
