The fonds consists of the personal papers and photographs of Robert M. Powell and his wife, Louise Powell, and manuscripts, photographs, works of art, seals, and medals created by their ancestors, particularly the Powell, Torrance, Proudfoot, and Hurd families of the nineteenth century. Robert M. Powell, who was a descendant of William Dummer Powell (1755-1834), an early Chief Justice of Upper Canada, kept documents, photographs and other material belonging to his ancestors including watercolour portraits and medals commemorating wedding anniversaries. He continued W. D. Powell's genealogical research, compiling detailed notes on the Powell, Hurd, Dummer, and Murray families, and gathered newspaper articles and other records relating to the Powell family legacy. The fonds thus documents successive generations of the Powell family as well as those of inter-married families.

Powell, Robert M. (Robert Montagu), 1914-2004 : Robert Montagu Powell was born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1914, the son of Montagu Grant Powell and Aurelia Powell (nee Hughson). The oldest of four children, Robert M. Powell attended Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, from which he graduated in 1930. Following Trinity, Powell enrolled at Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario graduating in1935 as head cadet. After RMC, he studied at the University of Toronto, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Applied Science in 1937, and found employment with CIL / DuPont Canada as a chemical engineer.

Powell married Louise Dewar, daughter of Gordon C. Dewar and Marguerite Dewar (nee Merritt), on September 3, 1938 at Bishop Strachan School in Toronto. The couple lived in Shawinigan, Quebec in the period before the Second World War. At the outbreak of war, Powell was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, and the couple moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia. He served in a variety of capacities in the Royal Canadian Navy, including in Motor Torpedo Boats and commanding the corvette HMCS Belleville from 1944 to 1945.

After the war, Powell returned to DuPont Canada. The Powells settled in Brockville in 1953 when he moved to the company's Maitland plant. After retiring in the early 1970s, he became the Powell family archivist and genealogist. As well as inheriting family heirlooms and manuscripts, he compiled information pertaining to almost all branches of the Powell and Dewar families. During retirement, Powell was also actively involved in the United Way and Canadian National Institute for the Blind and he was co-chairman of the Sherwood Park Manor building campaign. He served as warden and sat on the cemetery board for St. Peter's Anglican Church in Brockville. Robert Powell died March 17, 2004.

Associated material note:

Records and artifacts documenting Robert M. Powell's naval service in the Second World War and studies at Royal Military College have been donated to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and the RMC Museum in Kingston. Individual items related to local history of Brockville and Prescott, Ont. were transferred to the Brockville Museum and the Grenville County Historical Society. Photographs and objects relating to the service of William Dummer Powell IV in the United States Army Air Force (given by his widow to Robert M. Powell) were donated to the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington.
