Supreme Court : The Supreme Court of Canada was established in 1875 by the Supreme and Exchequer Court Act (38 Vic., c.11, 1875). In 1949 appeals to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council were abolished, and the Supreme Court became the highest court of all legal issues of federal and provincial jurisdiction. The Supreme Court consists of the Chief Justice and eight puisne judges who are appointed by the Governor in Council.
The Supreme Court is the general court of appeal for civil and criminal cases and the judgement of the court is final and conclusive. It also advises federal and provincial governments on important questions of law concerning the interpretation of the constitution, the constitutionality or interpretation of federal and provincial legislation, and the powers of Parliament and provincial legislatures. The Court also advises on other matters referred to it by the Governor in Council, or conferred on it by statute.
