This item is a bound volume, in-quarto, containing 194 folios (of which 152 pages are used). The title inscribed on the cover is "Invitation Book for 1823 & 1824". It consists of a register with names of guests invited to official ceremonies and dinners given most probably at the Château Saint-Louis in Quebec city by the governor-in-chief of British North America, George Ramsay, Earl of Dalhousie. The register is divided into sections titled: Dinner List, Private Ball List, Public Ball List, Honorable Legislative Council, Honorable Executive Council, Members of the Provincial Parliament, Dinner List for the Military, Ball List for the Military and Daily Invitations. In each section, we find an alphabetical list of persons with the dates when they were invited. This register is presumed to have been compiled by Jean-Baptiste Juchereau Duchesnay, who was the provincial aide-de-camp for Dalhousie during this period.

The document offers us a very good view of the social life in Quebec at the beginning of the 19th century. The abundance of names allows us to identify who was invited at the table of the governor and who was not part of this power circle. The book also gives an idea of the great number of dinners and balls that were given during those two years.

Juchereau Duchesnay, Jean-Baptiste, 1779-1833 : Jean-Baptiste Juchereau Duchesnay was born 16 February 1779 at Beauport, Quebec, the son of Antoine Juchereau and Catherine Dupré. He attended the Pétit Séminaire at Quebec for three years starting in 1792. In 1796 Juchereau Duchesnay become an ensign in the Royal Canadian Volunteer Regiment and was later promoted to lieutenant. He served with the regiment until it disbanded in 1802 whereupon he became a merchant at Lotbinière. In 1805 he rejoined the army and was commissioned an ensign in the 60th Foot, being promoted to lieutenant in 1806. He married 1 September 1807 to Eliza Jones at Quebec; they had four children. During the War of 1812 he served as a captain in the Voltigeurs Canadiens and was promoted to major in 1814. In 1821 he was named provincial aide-de-camp by Governor Lord Dalhousie, bringing him the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the militia. In 1823 he took command of the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli battalion of the militia and in 1828 was made militia inspector. In April 1832 he was appointed to the Legislative Council.
