The records contain blueprints, specifications and architectural, technical drawings as well as business records pertaining clients of Iron Cat Ltd.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Iron Cat Ltd : In 1931 during his third year of architectural studies at McGill University, James Woollven and John Bland, Harry Mayervitch, Norman McGregor and Harold Devitt apprenticed with a blacksmith in Lachine, Quebec due to the absence of work in architectural firms in Montreal.
Iron Cat Ltd. came to be in 1933 thanks to the initiative of five graduates of McGill's School of Architecture. The founders were: James A. Woollven, Norman McGregor, Harold Devitt, Fred Davis, and Jack Remmer. The business operated as a parterships from 1933-1937, then as Woollven and Devitt (1937-1978) and finally Woollven and (Peter) Woollven (1978 - ).
The firm specialized in architectural as well as interior design. Architectural plans and drawings were produced for projects such as: Kingsmere; Centre Block, Parliament buildings; and Manoir Baie-Comeau as well as for private residences, banks, office building, churches and schools for the wealthy and the upper middle class of Ontario and Quebec.
The business was located at 2037 Victoria Street (now 2020 University Street for 1933 to 1964, at which time it was moved to 1225 Green Avenue). A forge, a woodworking atelier and the offices of Iron Cat Inc., were located in one building. Wrought iron fixtures such as signs, guideposts, lamps, grilles, guard rails were made. Tin was hammered to make ash trays, serving trays and bowls. Furniture and accessories created from fine hardwoods and fabrics included drapes, carpets, mirrors, beds, tables, sofas, chairs, buffets, etc.
