The collection consists of maps prepared under the Dominion lands suvery completed in relation to the Soldiers Settlement Board. The maps were produced by the Topographical Survey of Canada, Department of the Interior, Ottawa. They cover areas in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The Soldier Settlement Board was established in Canada in 1917 to assist return servicemen to set up farms. The Board would give assistance to any man who had served abroad with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, to any former Canadian serviceman who had not left Canada but was in receipt of a service pension, to any member of the Imperial, Dominion or Allied forces who had lived in Canada before the war, or to any member of the Imperial or Dominion forces who had served outside their own country and who had since emigrated to Canada. ... By 1921, nearly 60,000 applications for loans had been made ... Alberta and Saskatchewan were the most popular provinces for settlement, followed by Manitoba, British Columbia and Ontario. During 1918, a through survey of Dominion lands was undertaken ... The increasing demand for soldier entry led to the focussing of attention on lands held vacant ... As a result the Soldier Settlement Act of 1919 authorized the Board to designate such lands as "settlement acres"... The Board was established by Order-in-Council passed Jan 30, 1918.
