12 photographs : b&w and col.Language of material:EnglishAdded language of material:English, FrenchScope and content:This series contains documents concerning the period when Roméo LeBlanc served as member of the Canadian Senate from 1984-1992 and Speaker of the Senate from 1993-1995. Most of the files deal with the meetings, activities and sub-committees of the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration, on which Roméo LeBlanc served as chairmen and which is concerned with the finances and administration of the Canadian Senate. This includes a number of files of the Sub-Committee on Budgets, which dealt with the general budget of the Senate, and the Sub-Committee on Accomodation and Facilities, which deals mostly with Senator's accomodations and renovations to the Senate, Parliament and the Library of Parliament. There are also numerous files that deal with the Sub-Committee on Classifications and Salaries, the reclassification project of the Senators' secretaries, the hiring of the Director of Services and the Director of Protective Services, Senator's international travel claims and expenses, conference requests, as well as files dealing with the Ad-Hoc Committee on Senator's Research Expenditures, which is concerned with the budget for the hiring of researchers and consultants.
Other files are concerned with the comprehensive audit of the Senate in the early 1990s, Senate Reform and the debate surrounding the imposition of the Goods and Services Tax (GST); the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and the signing of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and the 1987 Constitutional Accord (Meech Lake Accord).There are various speeches by Brian Mulroney, Frank McKenna, and presentations / submissions by Jean Chrétien. Also, there are responses to the Constitutional Accord by the provinces and their premiers, as well as various associations and organizations. There are also a number of files that deal with the Assemblée Internationale des Parliamentaires de Langue Francaise (AIPLF), the Special Joint Committee on a Renewed Canada, Opus Dei, women's rights, french language rights, the Canadian fisheries, the Acadians of New Brunswick and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).
Files in this series consist largely of correspondence between members of the senate and/or committee members. There is also some correspondence and handwritten notes written by Roméo LeBlanc, especially in the files of the Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration. Many of the files contain press releases, government reports, briefing notes, pamphlets, minutes for committee meetings, newspaper clippings, invitations and speeches or remarks made by Roméo LeBlanc and other officials.Additional information:Arrangement note:The material was disorganized in the boxes and had to be classified by the archivist, in relation to the activities and functions performed by the creator.Language note:The documents in this series are mainly in English, but some are in French.Source:Private -
