The collection consists of the works of several members of the Durnford family who were members of the Corps of Royal Engineers.

Contains works by Elias Walker Durnford, R.E. comprising 71 student drawings which illustrate the extensive training in design, geometry and construction given at the Royal Military Academy at Woollich, England. His work is also represented in approximately 39 student drawings and in various maps and plans of St. John's and Halifax. Thirty-seven hand-drawn plates by Viney Durnford, the son of Elias Walker Durnford were produced for an architectural course that dealt with such subjects as masonry, brickwork, carpenty and masonry. Several plans were produced under the direction of Elias Durnford (d.1794) who was the Chief Engineer at the seige of Mantinique and the battle of Guadaloupe and St. Lucia.

Durnford, Elias Walker, 1774-1850 : E.W. Durnford served as commanding officer of the Corps of Royal Engineers in Canada, 1816-1831. During the 1820s one of his sons, Philip, was an officer in the 68th Regiment and served at Quebec, Kingston and the Rideau Canal. At the time of the Rebellion he was paymaster of the Queen's Light Infantry, a regiment of Incorporated Militia. At the same time another son, John, was employed in Montreal.
