Toronto Board of Trade : The Toronto Board of Trade was organized in 1844 by a group of Toronto merchants and incorporated by Act of Parliament the following year. In 1884 the Toronto Corn Exchange was amalgamated with Board of Trade, and in the same year the Board began the development of Trade Branches representing various Toronto industries. In 1958 a further Act of Parliament changed the Board's name to the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Toronto.

The Board acted from the time of its foundation as a pressure group, lobbying all levels of government on a wide range of subjects on behalf of the business community; in particular, it took an interest in the areas of taxation, transportation, trade and municipal affairs. Other activities have included the holding of Annual Meetings and Annual Dinners; publication of the Board of Trade Journal (since 1923); organization of member tours and administration of disaster and emergency relief funds. The Board has been represented on various public and private bodies concerned with commercial, social and cultural matters. By 1970 the Board had a membership of over 14,000 governed by a Council of 24 elected members and a number of standing and special committees; affiliated with it were thirteen Trade Branches, the Board of Trade Club and the Toronto Junior Board of Trade.
