The series contains documents created and/or managed by Prime Minister Chrétien's two Executive Assistants, Michael R. McAdoo and Bruce Hartley.

Michael R. McAdoo was Executive Assistant to the Prime Minister from 1993 to 1995. Trained in journalism and international affairs, he was first Legislative Assistant to the Leader of the Official Opposition (1991-1993), and then senior writer / editor for the Liberal Party of Canada in the 1993 electoral campaign.

Bruce Hartley was Executive Assistant to the Prime Minister of Canada from 1995 to 2003. A lawyer by training, he spent more than 15 years of his career on Parliament Hill - the first seven as Legislative Assistant to the Leader of the Official Opposition, and then as Legislative Assistant to the Prime Minister (1993 to 1995).

As a member of the PMO's exempt political staff, the Executive Assistant must (among other things) offer political advice and support to the Prime Minister that he cannot obtain from public servants, who must remain politically neutral. In addition to managing and using the Prime Minister's internal and external time (their chief task), these Executive Assistants had a certain degree of influence on the development and administration of public policy. They also had an influence on various PMO management components and the activities of Prime Minister Chrétien.

This series contains correspondence, subject files, briefing notes, briefing books, reference material, and a wide range of working papers. A number of documents are initialled by Jean Chrétien, and some are originals signed by Canadian and international political figures.

The series contains 2,204 files and consists of seven (7) sub-series: Correspondence; Tours, Visits and Events; Subject Files; Press Releases and Notices; Speeches; Telephony; and Personal Files of the Executive Assistants.

Conservation:

The records of this series are in excellent general condition, and robust measures were taken to preserve them: all metal pieces were removed, newspaper clippings were removed and replaced with photocopies, records in a fragile state of preservation were also photocopied, etc. Lastly, records were removed from their original folders and placed in acid-free folders.
