The fonds documents the following areas: Personal and Biographical Records (ca. 1957 - 2004); University Teaching and Administration: (ca. 1970 - ); Studies (secondary school to doctoral degree), including material relating to his Ph.D. dissertation. Cherney's M.Mus. was in composition with John Weinzweig. Correspondence is organized chronologically from 1958 to 2004 and includes letters to and from Robert Aitken, John Beckwith, Norma Beecroft, Mario Bernardi, Hayes Biggs, the Chilingirian Quartet, Robert Cram, Robertson Davies, Samuel Dolin, Paul Helmer, Elmer Isler, Hope Lee, Bruce Mather, Aurele Nicolet, Alex Pauk, John Roberts, Roxolana Roslack, Harry Somers, Vivienne Spiteri, John Weinzweig, and several other prominent figures of the Canadian and international cultural scene. Compositions (1960-2004) constitute the largest block of records in the fonds and several scores have an iconographic nature. They include: compositional manuscripts, fair copies, and large mss folios; compositional working papers, sketches, including 1 densely-filled sketch pad, and sketch notes; juvenilia (compositions before 1963). Concert Programmes (printed material; ca. 1950s -): arranged in chronological segments and featuring Cherney's compositions, bear witness to the dissemination of contemporary Canadian works over a period of more than forty years. Writings (ca. 1970s-) include the authorized biography of Harry Somers (published 1975); articles, lecture transcripts, and other writings, published and unpublished. Among Cherney's published writings, the monograph on Harry Somers is of particular interest to researchers in relation to other music fonds. Cherney's archival records documenting the monograph include a pencil draft of each chapter, a typescript with editorial markings from the University of Toronto Press, index cards, and 10 scores of Somers, annotated, as well as a 5-page list of suggested emendations from Harry Somers (handwritten), and correspondence with the University of Toronto Press and with Canadian composer John Beckwith. Photographs (ca. 1950 to ca. 1990) are of a personal and professional nature. Archival Sound Recordings include 67 audio cassettes and 38 audio reels that contain performances and rehearsals, mainly of compositions by Brian Cherney, but also works by other contemporary composers (Henze, Boulez, Somers, and others).

Cherney, Brian, 1942- : Over the course of his composing career to date, Brian Cherney (b. 1942 in Peterborough, Ontario) was influenced, among others, by Bartók, Weinzweig, Kagel, Stockhausen, Ligeti, Crumb, Lutoslawski, Messiaen, and Carter. His music has been performed and broadcast throughout Canada, the USA, South America, Japan, Europe, and Israel. His String Trio (1976) tied for first place among the recommended works at the International Rostrum of Composers in Paris in 1979, and his orchestral work Distant Stillness was also recommended by the same international organization in 1984. In 1985 he was awarded the Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music for River of Fire. Cherney has received commissions, among many others, from the Stratford Festival, SMCQ, CBC, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Competition, the Montreal International Music Competition, and from several individual performers. One of his most recent works, Die Niemandsrose (2006) for choir was commissioned by the RIAS Kammerchor Berlin. Cherney's catalogue of works numbers over a hundred compositions for a variety of musical formations and soloists. His publisher is Doberman-Yppan and his manuscript works are available at the Canadian Music Centre. His works have been performed, broadcast, and recorded by many prominent performers and groups, including, most recently, Robert Aitken, the Viva Voce vocal ensemble (dir. Peter Schubert), Julie-Anne Derome, Alain Trudel, Vivienne Spiteri, Paul Vaillancourt, and Amici Strings. Since 1972 Cherney has taught composition, twentieth-century music analysis and history, and has chaired the Composition Area and Theory Department at the Faculty of Music at McGill University (now the Schulich School of Music). He is also the author of the only monograph to date on the great Canadian composer Harry Somers. He lives in Montreal with his wife Terri, and they have two grown children.
