This sub-series consists mainly of records, from the Communications Unit of the Office of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, of trips, visits and events abroad requiring official travel by the Prime Minister, and of official visits to Canada by foreign dignitaries.

Some of these records were created to frame official statements and messages (i.e. talking points, Q & A, background information, media briefer's book, etc.). Others review the media coverage of these events: press reviews, media monitoring reports (press conference and briefing transcriptions), news releases, etc. The sub-series also contains visit agendas and media itineraries, disseminated via news release by the Office of the Leader of the Opposition and then by the Prime Minister's Office or the Liberal Party of Canada.

The topics addressed in this sub-series are: trips taken by Prime Minister Chrétien, and official visits to Canada by foreign diplomats and heads of state (from a communications perspective: disseminated message, media management, etc.). These records shed light on Canada's international relations and its representation and influence on the world scene, especially within organizations such as Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the G-7, the G-8, the United Nations (UN), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), etc. They also illustrate the importance placed on trade missions by the Chrétien government (Team Canada, etc.), and help define the Communications Unit's role in disseminating messages and representing Canada abroad.
