Still-life painting by Elisabeth Pitkin, a relative of the L.J. Papineau family.
Image depicts apples, pears and other fruit with leaves and flowers on a blue marble surface.

A handwritten note that accompanies the painting provides the following information: A style of painting called Puna; done with theorems; once / very fashionable. / This piece was done by Aunt Elisabeth Pitkin when a / pupil at Miss Wayland's Seminary, Saratoza Springs, / New York, 1830. "Theorems" were patterns, very much / like the "stencil" work of to-day. / The paints were dry powders contained in a bottle, / there was a mixing fluid but how prepared and / applied I do not know. / (signed) Elisabeth S.
