The photographs are examples of the work done by Mr. Hunter as an independent photographer from the early 1950s until the 1990s. They include work done for industry, primarily in Canada, and a large amount of stock photography done mainly for editorial work all around the globe. Aerial photography, which was one of Mr. Hunter's strengths, can be found throughout the various parts of the fonds. The fonds also includes a series of portraits from Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Northwest Territories, Manitoba, Newfoundland, Quebéc, Alberta, Yukon, and British Columbia; some of the portraits include, Moira Shearer, John Nesbit, A.Y. Jackson, and King George VI with Queen Elizabeth.

More specifically, a selection of the content includes: construction on Churchill Falls power project, Churchill Falls, Nfld., 1969; Signal Hill and Confederation Building, St. John's Nfld., 1963; Fredericton, N.B., 1959; United Asbestos Corp. open pit mine, Black-Lake, Que., 1960; Sorel harbour, Sorel, Que., 1961; iron ore shipping facilities, Sept-Isle, Que., 1964; Montreal, Que. including: oil refineries and cement plants in Montreal East; the central business district in the late 1960's, Expo 67 site, Habitat, Montreal harbour, and the Jacques-Cartier Bridge; Dorval International Airport, Montreal, Que.; aerial views of the villages of Fogo and Barr'd Islands, Notre-Dame Bay, Nfld., Edmonton and Calgary, Alta. and Goderich, Ont., Quebec City, QC (including the Citadel, Chateau Frontenac, Lower Town, Laval University, the harbour, Ile d'Orléans, and ships on St. Lawrence River at Quebec, Quebec), Vancouver and Victoria, BC; Air Canada Reserves; Vancouver airport, Vancouver, B.C., 1959; Edmonton Airport, Edmonton, Alta., 1959; Calgary Airport, Calgary, Alta.; DC 8 flight simulator; dart engine testing; Eldorado Mining & Refining Ltd., Port Hope Refinery, Port Hope, Ont.; Clairtone Sound Corp., Stellarton, N.S.; portraits of TCA Chef Frank Salverda and George Lothian; Bell Telephone Company's publication "Bell Canada Workers of Today are Tomorrow's Bell Canada Pioneers"; Spartan Air Services, dating from the 1950s; Clairtone Sound, 1966; Heinztmann Pianos, 1964; James Howden Company, 1959; Orenda Engines.

Hunter, George, : George Hunter was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1921. His professional photography career begun during the late 1930s. Hunter specialized in location photography for government and corporate clients in petrochemical, mining, forestry, manufacturing and the travel industry. He also worked as a photojournalist and for the National Film Board (1945-1950). Hunter's work has become iconic, within Canadian culture. His images have appeared on Canadian currency, and stamps, and were displayed at the Canada, Western Provinces, Ontario and Quebec pavilions, at Expo 67. His work, moreover, has been used to illustrate Canadian life within a variety of international publications, including TIME magazine.
Hunter was appointed to the Royal Academy of Arts, in 1977. Five major banks have mounted exhibitions of Hunter's photography. His work has also been exhibited by the National Film Board (1972), the Prince of Wales Heritage Centre, Yellowknife (2005), the Las Vegas Art Museum (2005) and the Mississauga Art Gallery (2006).

Historique de la conservation :

The photographs were produced by Mr. Hunter and used by him as revenue producing vehicles. In practice this meant that many of the transparencies were hired out to stock photo agencies around the world.
