Dates of creation note:

At the age of 14, probably around 1913, Cuthbertson's parents took him to England. He returned to Canada and completed a course at the Royal Military College Kingston, spending his summers travelling about Canada. He enlisted in 1917, in the Navy, at the age of 17. See MacLeans, Sept. 15, 1930. It is on this basis that the book is dated to [1916-17]. Also: one sketch before Halifax explosion of 1917 and one sketch after burning of Parliament Buildings, Feb. 3, 1916.
