Fonds consists of material on W.C. MacKenzie's education, his articles and publications 1940-2006, his professional and private correspondence 1956-1997. Also his correspondence in and about Scottish Gaelic 1939-1998. Eleven personal and group photos 1942-2000. MacKenzie's employment and contract files 1937-1985, his memos to assistant deputy ministers of Fisheries and Oceans 1977-1981, his general memos, memos to the Fisheries Support Board 1976-1979 and the Canadian Saltfish Corp. 1975-1982.

Papers and reports on numerous aspects of the fisheries by MacKenzie and others 1974-1986, material on acquaculture 1977-1981, fisheries statistics including general and recalculated statistics 1949-1997. Files on MacKenzie's work on international fishing rights on Canada's east coast and his work for the Fisheries Division of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome 1981-1994.

Mackenzie, W. C., 1912-2008 : Wilson Campbell (Bill) MacKenzie was born on 18 Oct. 1912 in New Aberdeen NS. After his public school education in Baddeck, he went to Dalhousie University where he graduated with a BA and then a MA in Economics and Public Administration in 1938. W.C. MacKenzie held various positions with the Nova Scotia and federal government until 1948 when he started work with the federal Department of Fisheries helping it to develop economic and statistical tools.

MacKenzie became a research and planning officer for the department and later member of the federal/provincial Newfoundland Fisheries Development Committee 1951-1953. He was director of the Economic and Intelligence Service of the Dept. of Fisheries 1953-1970. From 1970 to his retirement in 1981, MacKenzie was senior policy advisor on planning for Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Minister of Fisheries. He was also the chairman of the Fisheries Prices Support Board, 1976-1979. In 1978 MacKenzie received the Public Service Merit Award for his fisheries work.

After his retirement, W.C. MacKenzie worked on contract for his former department on studies concerning revenue stabilization, the Task Force on Atlantic Fisheries (1982), international fisheries negotiations (1983), fishery management for trawler development (1985), a fishery management policy for the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (19881-1982) and the potential for the development of aquaculture (1981). Bill Mackenzie died in Feb. 2008.
