While most of the works are attributed either on the score itself or in Neil Chotem's indexes or catalogue, a significant number of manuscripts in his hand are unattributed as to their composer and/or arranger. While it seems likely that Chotem in some way participated in the creation of these unattributed works, the file and item descriptions do not include unconfirmed information as to their composer or arranger.

The Musical Works series is further arranged into sub-series which reflect Neil Chotem's filing practices: Indexes and Catalogue; Early Works; Scores; Parts and Scores. While Chotem's general practice was to file and store his scores and parts separately, he was not entirely consistent in this practice. The Scores sub-series consists predominantly of scores, and occasionally includes associated parts such as those for rehearsal piano. The Parts and Scores sub-series in practice consists predominantly of parts, but a significant percentage of the files also include scores (in some cases, the score apparently served double-duty as the part for the pianist and group leader). While most musical works in the series are represented in the form of scores and parts, some are documented only in one format.
