The Walter Gow fonds consists of textual records, photographs, drawings and maps documenting the professional career and personal life of Colonel Walter Gow. It includes reports, operation orders, instructions for offensives, reconnaissance reports, correspondence, clippings, programs, banking records, publications, a notebook and passport. It also includes one album of black and white photographs, likely duplicates; a series of loose black and white photographs, likely copies; a panorama photograph of Vimy Ridge and a captured German war folder consisting of aerial reconnaissance photographs which note the photographer, location and date the photo was taken. It includes 5 prints of pencil drawings of places in Belgium and several maps, some with annotations, used for offensive and reconnaissance purposes. The fonds also includes one file of textual material related to the death and estate of John McCrae.

The donation dates largely from 1914 to 1919.

Gow, Walter, 1872-1959 : Walter Gow was born in Guelph, Ontario on August 11, 1872. He earned a Bachelor of Civil law (B.C.L.) from Trinity College, University of Toronto in 1894, and was called to the Bar of Ontario. Gow enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on April 15th, 1915 and was appointed Captain of the 35th Battalion, CEF on January 8th, 1915. Gow was promoted to the rank of Major on August 26th 1915 and embarked for England on October 16th of the same year. On April 25th, 1916 Gow left England for France where he fought with the 19th Battalion, CEF. On January 29th, 1917 Walter Gow was promoted to Temporary Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel and appointed Deputy-Minister, Ministry of the Overseas Military Forces of Canada in London, England. He was promoted to Temporary Honorary Colonel on February 1st, 1918. Colonel Gow was relieved of duty as Deputy-Minister on October 31, 1918. He returned to Canada January 29, 1919.

In 1919, Colonel Gow attended the Peace Conference with Prime Minister Borden, Canadian Cabinet Ministers and other officials. Following the war, Gow was a corporate lawyer and member of Blake, Lash, Anglin and Cassels in Toronto. Colonel Gow was also Director of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, Brazilian Traction (Brascan), Light and Power Co., Mexican Light and Power Co., Mexico Tramways Co., and Barcelona Traction, Light and Power Co. Gow was a Presbyterian and unmarried. He died May 25, 1959 at the age of 86.
