This sailing chart was made by James Cook and probably is the chart referred to in "Coast of Nova Scotia Newfoundland & Cape Breton." The chart shows the sightings required for safe passage into the harbour and gives the soundings in the area. Detail is limited to the shore area. Cook was in the Halifax area from 1758 to 1762 and the map is based on information gathered during this period. It probably was 'fair drawn' upon his return to England in 1762 and quite likely is one of the charts referred to by Lord Colville who in writing the Admiralty in December 30, 1762 states "Mr. Cook, late Master of the Northumberland, acquaints me that he has laid before their Lordships all his draughts and observations relating to the River St. Lawrence, part of the coast of Nova Scotia, and of Newfoundland..." (quoted in Skelton p. 99).
