The map, drawn in typical Bowen style, shows North and South America to the extent to which they were known at the time. Bowen's habit of adding notes on discovery, geography, natives and other subjects makes the map extremely interesting. A peculiar element of the map is the placement of "A New Discovered Sea" on the east side of Hudson's Bay. Many cartographers of the mid 18th century made haphazard guesses about this supposed sea, but only a few, among whom Bowen was one, actually made the false sea an integral part of their maps. The date of the map [1763] is arrived at from various sources. The map was probably printed only a short time after the death of George II to whom Bowen was geographer. The dedication to George III (1760-1820) also indicates that the map was published early in the 1760's. Map Collectors Circle #16, P. 47 lists a map of "America" 1763. The map in question is probably the same. Bowen also published two atlases about this time in one of which the map may have appeared. However neither the: Large English Atlas of 1760 nor the: Royal English Atlas of 1762 is available for consultation. Nor is there a published list of maps in these atlases. Finally the map is probably a revision and enlargement of Bowen's map of North & South America in his: Complete Atlas 1752.
