In the North American portion of the map California appears as a peninsula and western Canada and the United States is either blank or contains the contemporary misconceptions of the area. The western coastline of North America, shown here extending very far west and north, with very little detail. with the name Terra Esonis Incognita. The remnants of the interior sea can be seen near the Pais de Moozemleck where a river nearly connects with the Mississippi River system, hinting at the possibility of a Northwest Passage. The Great Lakes are taking shape, being actively explored by the French fur traders and the Hudson Bay Company. The Solomon Islands are prominently placed in the Pacific, considerably too far to the east.Provenance:Additional information:General note:Pictorial relief.
Copper engraving.
The map went through at least three, perhaps four editions, and probably numerous states within each edition. This map represents the first identifiable edition differing from the others in a number of details. This map is very similar to the H6/1-2000/[1729] copy but a significant difference appears in the imprint. The copy described here does not have the "Cum Privilegio Sac. Caes. Majestatis", a title J.B. Homann never got this son J.C. did in 1729. As a consequence of the facts that Homann has his Geographer to the Kaiser (1715) (which he did not have in the [1710] Tooley copy) and the watermark of this map is the same as that of map [75] dated 1721 the map has been dated within this range 1715-1721.
In the bottom left corner the hand coloured title cartouche shows natives, flora and fauna and a landscape of an early New England town. In the upper left corner the cartouche with historical data showing justaposed a missionary and a shaman with their respective followers.
