First state of Hondius decorative world map, first issued in the 1630 edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas, in response to competition from Willem Blaeu. Strikingly ornate double hemisphere world map. For geographical detail Hondius has followed Speed and his contemporaries and also depicts California as an island. New features include part of the north Australia coastline extending towards New Guinea and a redrawing of north-east Canada with `Queen Anne's forland' (Baffin Island) shown completely encircled by open water. Three strapwork cartouches appear on the map along with scenes representing the four elements are above and below each hemisphere; in the upper cusp is a celestial globe; and in the lower cusp are allegorical figures representing Asia, America and Africa making obeisance to Europe. In the top corners are portraits of Julius Caesar and Claudius Ptolemy and in the bottom corners are portraits of the author's father Jodocus Hondius and his mentor Gerard Mercator.

Map includes a cartouche with a dedication to David Sanclaro, Antonio de Wilon and D. Martino Matheseos, professors in the Paris Academy.
On verso: 2 pages of French text. Right hand side titled: Description de l'univers. "1" appears in upper right corner.
Map first appeared in theGerman and French editions of the atlas of Mercator and Hondius published in 1633 in Amsterdam.
