This map depicts parts of the parishes of St. Boniface, Kildonan, and St. Pauls, in and around the northern part of present-day Winnipeg. It shows the development of the square lot system over and around the pre-existing river lot system of these Métis parishes, which were characteristically divided into long and narrow river lots. The "outer two miles" of river lots were used for hay and pasture and were highly contested between the Métis and later settlers.

The Roman Catholic mission at St. Boniface, founded in 1818, became the first parish of Red River Settlement. The parish of Kildonan developed around Kildonan Presbyterian Church, founded in 1853 mostly by descendants of Selkirk Settlers. St. Paul's, also known as Image Plain, was the parish associated with St. Paul's Middlechurch, an Anglican church built in 1825.

This map was surveyed in February 1872. It was first published 1 July 1877 with additional manuscript corrections made around 1903.

There are two versions of this map, which was surveyed in 1872 and published in 1877. This is the first version, which contains much manuscript information dating up to 1903. This information relates to land patents. Another manuscript note contains the date 1/12/24 and the file number 155939. The second map (NMC118058, Mikan/item number 5300702) is a version of the first on which all information is identical, with the exception of the file number note, which does not appear.
