Dennis, Surveyor General for the Dominion Lands Office,Extent:1 map : print ; 56.2 x 94 cm.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:This map depicts parts of the parishes of St. Norbert and St. Vital, in the southern part of present-day Winnipeg. The acreage of lots is given. As is typical of Métis settlements, the land is divided into long and narrow river lots. The "outer two miles" of river lots were used for hay and pasture and were highly contested between the Métis and later settlers. This map shows the development of settler municipalities and farmlands, with their square lot system, around and over the pre-existing Métis river lot system.
The Métis settlement on the Rivière Sale (later known as the La Salle River) became the Roman Catholic parish of St. Norbert in 1857.Additional name(s):Additional information:Cartographic math data:Scale 1:15,840Availability of other formats note:The microfiche version is NMC11784Dates of creation note:Two dates are used because the surveying was completed in 1874 and the map was published on 1 July 1877.Signatures and inscriptions note:A note at the bottom of the map reads "The data on the lower line was taken from D.L.S.
