Series consists of documents created, accumulated, and used by Helen McNamara in the course of her activities as a journalist and writer working in the area of jazz and other music. Included are such documents as: correspondence from musicians (e.g., Gordon Delamont, Joan Fairfax, Percy Faith, Robert Farnon, Ella Fitzgerald, Edmond Hall, Art Hallman, Clement Hambourg, Johnny Holmes, Pete Johnson, Marian McPartland, George Shearing, Moxie Whitney) and others (e.g. the critic Leonard Feather); copies of McNamara's outgoing correspondence; concert programmes and posters; promotional material; press clippings of articles written by McNamara; press clippings of articles written by others, and other printed reference materials; interview, research, and biographical notes; biographies; draft and typescript articles by McNamara and others; outlines, synopsis, script and other materials on a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television special on the American composer, pianist, and bandleader Duke Ellington; sound recording of McNamara's 1966 interview with Ellington; group and individual photographs of musicians (e.g., Salome Bey, Eubie Blake, Lenny Breau, Paul Brodie, Ron Collier, Robert Farnon, Bobby Gimby, Calvin Jackson, Lonnie Johnson, Moe Koffman, Jimmy McPartland, Marian McPartland, Anne Marie Moss, Gerry Mulligan, Phil Nimmons, Oscar Peterson, Bernie Piltch, Pee Wee Russell, George Shearing, Herbie Spanier, Fred Stone, Norman Symonds) and of others (e.g., Leonard Feather).

The files are largely organised into general alphabetical files by letters of the alphabet, grouping individual musicians (usually by surname), ensembles, and other music-related subjects. Some documents are in files specific to an individual musician or subject. The general alphabetical files are further organised into separate files for Canadian and foreign artists and subjects. Note that documents on foreign-born musicians who lived and worked in Canada (e.g., Calvin Jackson, Lonnie Johnson) are located in the Canadian files.
