The Communications Directorate is responsible for implementing programs and activities intended to increase public awareness of the electoral system and the role of Elections Canada, to inform electors about their right to vote and how to exercise that right, and to report on the conduct and results of federal elections.

The material in this directorate includes a significant amount of administrative textual records relating to advertising, public relations and information services. The directorate also distributes a large number of publications which are acquired by libraries, especially the National Library under the "legal deposit" system. Included are reports, bulletins, guides and informational brochures, as well as Elections Canada's newsletter called "Contact."

The operational records in the Communications Directorate relate to the overall direction of the communications programme of Elections Canada. In addition to these files, the directorate holds files relating to "Behind the Ballot Box" - a joint exhibit put on by Elections Canada in cooperation with the National Archives in 1985.
