The International Directorate is responsible for providing electoral assistance to other jurisdictions. Elections Canada offers advice on electoral laws, trains electoral officers, participates in electoral mapping and provides election materials. The duties of the directorate also includes territorial general and by-elections in the Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories as well assistance to Canadian municipal and provincial electoral officials.

The records in this directorate reflect the range of these activities, covering general relations between Elections Canada and other jurisdictions, as well as assistance on specific electoral events. The General Files in these subject blocks document the nature and scope of the advice provided to these countries, provinces and municipalities.

With respect to administration of individual elections, the International Services Directorate maintains records on its role in the administration of territorial elections and by-elections in the NWT, Yukon and Nunavut. Also included in the records of this directorate are the returning officers profiles for the NWT, Yukon and Nunavut. Generally, these records contain Orders-in-Council of the appointment and resignation, oaths, tombstone data about each Returning Officer, routine correspondence with the Chief Electoral Officer and procedural matters. The directorate also produces microforms of the preliminary lists of electors and reports on territorial elections for the NWT and the Yukon.
