This is a preliminary description, please consult the linked accessions. This sous-fonds consists of records created and maintained by the Veterans Review and Appeal Board and its predecessors, the Veterans Appeal Board, the Canada Pension Commission, the Pension Review Board and War Veterans Allowance Board.

The Veterans Appeal Board was established under the Veterans Appeal Board Act of 1987 as an independent agency reporting to Parliament through the Minister of Veterans Affairs. The Board served as the final tribunal for those seeking to appeal decisions made by the Entitlement and/or Assessment Boards of the Canadian Pension Commission or the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Veterans Appeal Board was also responsible for providing interpretations of the Pension Act, the Civilian War Pensions and Allowances Act, the War Veterans Allowance Act and related statutes. The Board began operations on September 14, 1987.

At the time of its establishment, the Veterans Appeal Board replaced two earlier independent boards, the Pension Review Board (established in 1971), and the War Veterans Allowance Board (established in 1936). In 1995, the Veterans Appeal Board was itself replaced by the Veterans Review and Appeal Board (which also replaced the Canadian Pension Commission). An independent agency established under the Veterans Review and Appeal Board Act of 1995, the Veterans Review and Appeal Board assumed all the functions of the former Veterans Appeal Board, and the core functions of the former Canadian Pension Commission. The board also adjudicates pensions under the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pension Continuation Act and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Superannuation Act.
