Biography/Administrative history:

Laet, Joannes de, 1593-1649 : Geographer and naturalist. Served as director of the Dutch West India Comapny and was in charge of the Dutch interests in America and Africia.Laet used the Comapny's official cartographer Hessel Gerristz, to prepare maps, including 10 of South America for his work Nieuwe Wereldt ofte Beschriijvinghe van West-Indien, Leiden, Issak Elzevier. 1625 Dutch edition, 1630 Latin edition, 1633 French edition.
